How to use Geste.

Lunch to remember, a walk home, a thought to keep. Geste brings those little parts of the day together on your iPhone. Here is how to use it, at your own pace.

On your first day, one meal or a note is enough. You can explore the rest as you go. There is no account to create.

Find your way around Today.

Today is your starting point. Beneath the dial, choose Food, Movement or Steps to change the reading. If you have set a goal, the dial shows how the records you have added compare with it.

Use + Food and + Movement to add an entry. Scroll down or tap the arrow to see the details of your day. Sections open with a + and close with a −. Geste remembers which sections you opened on this device.

The date at the top takes you to another day. Forgot yesterday’s lunch? You can still add it. A diary is allowed to run a little late.

Log a meal without making it a project.

Tap + Food, then open “What did you eat today?”. Give the meal a name or describe what was in it. “Rice, vegetables and chicken” is a useful start. You can take a photo or choose one from your library.

Under Estimate, the local food database lets you look up foods. If you already know the values, open Nutrition and enter the calories. Protein, carbs and fat are optional: leave them blank when you do not know.

With Geste Pro, you can request an AI estimate from your description or selected photo. Read the result, check the ingredients and adjust portions before saving. A photo cannot always tell how much oil went into the pan.

Date & note lets you set the meal’s date and time and add a comment. Finish with Save food. For a lunch you eat often, “Use a recent meal”, inside the food form, saves you from entering everything again.

Keep a record of your movement.

Tap + Movement and open “How did you move today?”. Choose an activity type and give it a name. For a walk or run, enter distance and duration. For other activities, the fields adapt to the type you select.

Under Calories & steps, you can add the values or use the available estimates. Energy estimates take account of the activity, duration, intensity and your weight when needed. To estimate steps for a walk or run, enter a distance.

These figures remain estimates. You can correct them before saving. You can also add a note and photo: the route name, what you did or a moment from the outing. Geste records what you add; this form does not track a live GPS route.

See your week in Overview.

Overview brings together entries from a week or month. Choose a period, then open the sections you want to see: movement, distance, active days, food or nutrients. Days with recorded activities appear in the weekly view.

Your goals lets you choose personal targets for food, movement and steps. Goals are optional and you can change them. Log weight adds a dated measurement, with previous records available under Weight.

Overview reflects the entries you have added and any Apple Health data you chose to import. A day without an entry does not tell the whole story of your day. It only means the diary was not filled in.

Write a few words in Journal.

In Journal, tap + Note to write. Add a title, your words and a photograph if you like. Describe a particular moment or leave a sentence. “Good day, disappointing coffee” is a perfectly acceptable entry.

Your check in lets you record mood and energy, with space for a comment. It is another way to remember the day when you do not feel like writing much.

Use the date to find another day and scroll down to browse your notes. Your writing stays on your device. It is not sent to the food estimation service.

Apple Health and move reminders.

Open Apple Health in Geste’s menu to choose permissions. With your agreement, Geste can read steps, import workouts and save activities you add to Apple Health when export is enabled. Connecting is optional; you can review permissions in Apple Health.

In Move reminders, choose what you would like to do: move, walk or stretch. Set the frequency, hours and days, then save. Notifications must be allowed in iPhone Settings.

You can keep reminders to working hours or particular days. Sunday morning can remain Sunday morning.

Make Geste your own.

The nine-dot button opens settings. Language, Theme, Your activities and the other sections open with a +. On first launch, Geste follows your iPhone’s language, in French or English; you can change that choice later.

Choose Charcoal & cream, Light parchment, Olive & cream, Burgundy & parchment or Pride. The content stays the same. Pride adds rainbow colours to the stacks of sections.

You can edit or delete your saved entries. Meals, activities, notes, photos and weight records stay on this device. Geste has no required account or cloud backup service of its own: check your iPhone backups before changing devices or deleting the app.

What Geste Pro adds.

Manual logging, photos, local food and exercise databases, Journal, goals, themes, reminders and Apple Health are available without a subscription. Geste Pro adds AI food estimation, with 200 estimates per calendar month. The allowance renews on the first of the month; unused estimates do not roll over.

The subscription costs €4.99 per month or €39.99 per year. A 7 day trial is available to eligible subscribers. Prices can vary by region; Apple shows the applicable price and conditions before purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless cancelled and is managed in your Apple account settings.

When you choose an AI estimate and give permission, the meal description and selected photo are sent through Cloudflare to OpenAI. Your journal notes and Apple Health data are not sent. You can keep using manual entry and the local database without requesting an AI estimate.

A few practical questions.

Do I need to fill everything in every day?

No. You can use Geste for food, activities, Journal or just some of those features. Goals and Apple Health access are optional.

Can I use Geste offline?

Manual entry and local databases work offline. AI food estimation and subscription operations require an internet connection.

Are calorie estimates exact?

Food and activity estimates are approximate and editable. Check portions and values before saving. Geste does not provide medical advice.

Can I edit a meal or activity?

Yes. Find the entry in your history, open it and use the editing options. You can also delete an entry.

Is Geste available on Android?

Geste is currently available for iPhone. The Android version is in preparation and has not been published on Google Play yet.

I’m Georges Daou, an architect and designer in Paris, and I develop Geste independently. I like interfaces where things have a place. In Geste, I wanted the details to stay within reach, with enough space for the day to breathe. If something is missing or getting on your nerves, write to me. I’m interested in both.
